The Boom and the Break: The Strongest Business Survey in Four Years Lifted Stocks — and the Breadth Gauge Broke Its Line Anyway

Friday delivered the strongest reading on American business activity since April 2022, and every index rose. It also delivered the one number the framework has been watching for three weeks — and that number fell through its line while prices went up. That combination, more than any headline, sets up the Nvidia-and-Warsh week.

What Happened

The economy said "boom." S&P Global's flash survey of about 1,150 US businesses came in at 56.0 for August — the fastest expansion in 52 months, with services at a 20-month high, the strongest hiring since January 2025, and selling-price pressures cooling. Third-quarter growth is now tracking near 3%. The Dow rose 518 points (+1%), the S&P 0.4%, the Nasdaq-100 0.3%, and small caps 0.9%. It was a relief day after a rough week: the S&P still lost 1.4% and the Nasdaq-100 2.5% over the five sessions.

The breadth gauge broke anyway. The single number this digest has flagged for three weeks — the count of Nasdaq-100 stocks still on technical buy signals — fell from 60.40 to 57.43, through the 60 line that separates a correction from something structural. On Thursday we wrote that "one more down day breaks it." It broke on an up day. Think of a football team that wins the match while three more starters limp off: the scoreboard says one thing, the treatment room says another. The rally was narrow, led by banks and cyclicals, and the broad participation gauges were sold into the closing bell — one advance/decline measure went from +1,240 at its intraday peak to +587 at the close.

Good news was bad news for bonds. A booming survey on top of last week's faded government bond-buyback pushed the 10-year yield to 4.74% — its fourth straight close above the 4.70 line — and the 30-year to 5.28%, two basis points from the level that would trigger a separate rate alarm. Gold rose 2.2% to a new record near 4,617 and bitcoin had its best week in two years. When both the "no-issuer" assets rally while government bonds fall, the market is pricing a fiscal story, not a growth scare.

The weekend cut both ways on Iran. President Pezeshkian said it is "better to end the war today" and publicly defended the June memorandum against hardliners — the first de-escalation language from Tehran since the deal's 60-day deadline lapsed — and Iran confirmed a meeting with Pakistan's army chief today as a mediator. On the same day, Treasury Secretary Bessent is due to detail the "economic warfare" sanctions package, including measures aimed at countries providing Iran a lifeline, with China in scope. Brent's October contract settled Friday at $94.39 — its high of $94.81 came within 19 cents of the framework's $95 escalation line — and the live price opened Monday about 1% lower.

Under the Hood: Momentum Indecisive, Trend Deteriorating

Friday's internals split cleanly into two camps. The oscillators — the daily breadth thermometers for both exchanges — improved, with the Nasdaq version back above zero for the third sign-change in four sessions. Banks reclaimed 185 and transports reclaimed their trigger, un-firing one leg each of the rollover checklist. Credit did what it has done all week: nothing (junk bonds flat, 0.3% off their highs).

The trend gauges went the other way. The NYSE's weekly momentum summation fell for a fifth straight session to 226, deeper under the 250 floor that has historically preceded "staircase" declines. The new-highs-versus-new-lows index fell for a seventh day. And the bullish-percent count broke 60. Oscillators flipping daily while the trend gauges grind lower is the configuration of a market waiting for an event to decide it — which is exactly what this week provides.

Why the break on an up-day matters more, not less: if the count had fallen through 60 on a −1% day, it would simply have confirmed the price. Falling through 60 while the index rises means the average Nasdaq-100 stock is losing its uptrend while the index is held up by a narrowing group. The framework's rule is mechanical: below 60, structural short positions are permitted again for the first time since 4 August. Above 60 again, they are withdrawn. Above 70, the bull case reopens.

The Four Paths — Reweighted

C · Structural rollover (modal)
36% ▲+1
B · Range between the magnets
27% ▲+1
D · Shock (oil / rates / credit)
26% ▼−3
A · Bull continuation
11% ▲+1

Why rollover stays on top: the breadth binary broke, the weekly summation is in cascade configuration, and the Nasdaq-100 closed under its 50-day average for a second day. Why shock eased three points: oil's $95 line held by 19 cents, the fear gauge was crushed to 15, credit never flinched, and Tehran produced its first conciliatory words in weeks. Why range gained: Friday's lows stopped 31–33 points short of the early-August "magnets" and the highs stopped 3–21 points short of the overhead gaps — the market respected both edges without touching either. That is a range, by definition, until an event resolves it.

The Long Game: One Week to the Verdict Print

The core structural thesis — a three-peak weakening of long-term momentum on the Nasdaq-100 across 2018, 2021 and 2025-26, matching the pattern last seen in 1999 — is a week from its next hard checkpoint. August's monthly bar closes next Monday. The monthly momentum gauge is running at 69.44, 8.44 points under the 77.88 cancellation line, below 70 for a fourth straight session. A close anywhere near current prices locks the third peak lower. Only a future monthly close with the gauge back above 77.88 cancels the thesis; nothing in Friday's boom moved toward that.

The Week Ahead: The Bracket Week

Today has no US data — just the sanctions briefing and the Pakistan meeting, a genuinely two-sided oil headline. Nvidia reports Wednesday evening. Thursday brings the retail sentiment print. Friday morning stacks the Fed's preferred inflation gauge with new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote. Warsh has stopped telegraphing intentions, and he speaks into a tape where the 10-year is at 4.74% and the economy just printed a 52-month-high survey. The reading almost nobody is hedged for (equity put/call fell to 0.51, the fear gauge is 15) is the simplest one: "the economy is booming — why would we ease?" Rather than predict that outcome, the framework brackets it — see Option 8.

Trade Ideas — Eight Structures for This Tape

Framework-derived structures with explicit entries, stops, targets and abandon-conditions. Sized for a leveraged CFD book under the 30% tactical cap imposed by the oil rule; structural shorts are re-licensed inside that cap. These are educational illustrations of how the framework expresses its read — not recommendations.

Option 1 · Structural short · Win ~58%
Nasdaq: sell the five-layer cluster — the re-licensed trade
Position
Existing 2% short from ~29,356 (filled Friday at the cluster) carries. The breadth break upgrades this from a tactical fade to a structural position
Entry
Add 1% on any 30-min rejection close inside 29,397–29,438; add 0.5% at 29,540–29,560 only if the first add is on. Never add on weakness below 29,300
Stop
29,690 for the adds — above every overhead layer (~0.6% book risk); the original 2% keeps its 29,560 trail
Targets
29,146 (⅓) · 29,109 gap top (⅓) · 28,935 then 28,777 runner
Exit regardless
Breadth count re-closes above 60 (license withdrawn — exit the adds) · 30-min close above 29,690 · any mediation/signature headline · junk bonds close below 94 (different playbook)
Option 2 · Contrarian long · Win ~53% (half-size)
Nasdaq: buy the floor cluster at 29,105–29,150 — the magnet, re-anchored
Entry
Long 0.75% on a tag of 29,105–29,150 with a 30-min reversal candle; add 0.5% at 28,940 only if VIX is under 18 and junk bonds hold 95. No third rung while the breadth binary is broken
Stop
28,700 — below the full gap fill (~0.3% book risk)
Targets
29,265 (⅓) · 29,325 50-day (⅓) · 29,397 flat — never hold into the fade cluster
Exit regardless
30-min close below 29,090 without a bounce · junk bonds <94.5 intraday · a $95 oil settle · VIX through 18 on a sanctions headline. Flat by Tuesday's close regardless
Option 3 · Hedge · Asymmetry trade
VIX: hold the compressed spring — the profit-take line moved down to 16.00
Position
Core long from the 14.9–15.1 zone, now roughly flat after Friday's crush. Honest note: Thursday's +1.0 mark was given back because the mechanical 16.31 scale was never printed (high 15.88). The rule stays; the line follows the 20-day average to 16.00
Action
Add 0.5% only on a spot print below 14.5 · take ⅓ off at 16.00 · next ⅓ at 18.48 · runner only on a $95 settle, a Hormuz incident, an Nvidia miss or a hawkish Warsh
Why hold
Weekly momentum is at its most compressed reading of the cycle, and VIX futures at 17.43 sit 15% above spot — the curve is paying for this week's events even as spot ignores them
Exit regardless
Exit half if no print above 16.00 by Tuesday's close · exit all on a mediation date plus oil under $88.50 · any spike above 26: sell everything into it
Option 4 · Structural long · Win ~54% · Restored to full size
S&P: the buy ladder at the decision band and the gap — three rungs
Entry
Resting 7,644 (0.5% — the 20-day average, new top rung) / 7,629 (1%) / 7,604 (0.5%). Restored to full size because banks re-closed above 185, the kill-condition that halved it Friday
Stop
7,515 — below the 50-day/69-day cluster (~0.35% book risk)
Targets
7,690 (half) · 7,700–7,708 gap (trim) · 7,714 flat — the lid owns above
Exit regardless
Junk bonds close <94 · a $95 oil settle · 30-min close below 7,595 with no bounce · a hawkish Warsh with the 10-year above 4.80%
Option 5 · Tactical short · Win ~56%
S&P: fade the double lid at 7,700–7,732 — with the stop beyond the magnet
Entry
Short 1% at 7,700–7,712 on first touch (the Walmart gap, refused by 2.85 points Friday); add 0.5% at 7,725–7,735 on a 30-min rejection candle
Stop
7,752 — above the 18-Aug gap top at 7,745, because that gap is a magnet and a stop inside a magnet is not a stop (~0.25% book risk). Pre-close rule: if price is above 7,720 at 15:30 ET, exit before the bell — no overnight inside the gap
Targets
7,674 (⅓) · 7,644 (⅓) · 7,629 flat — the buy ladder owns below
Exit regardless
30-min close above 7,745 (the gap filled = first real repair) · mediation/signature headline · a Nvidia-anticipation squeeze with Nasdaq above 29,690
Option 6 · Macro short · Win ~56% · The working trade
Rates-banks short: held at 2% — no adds while banks disagree
Status
1% runner from ~29,650 plus Friday's 1% add from ~29,350 (blend ~29,500, +191 at the close); half the original was banked at 29,306 Thursday. The rate leg strengthened (4th close above 4.70%); the bank leg reversed (banks back above 185) — hold, don't press
Action
No adds while banks hold 185. Add a separate 0.5% leg on a 30-year close above 5.30% (two basis points away), regardless of banks
Stop
Trail 29,560 — one line for the whole position (~0.4% book risk from here)
Targets
29,146 (¼) · 29,109 (¼) · 28,935 (trim) · 28,777 reassess
Exit regardless
10-year below 4.55% · banks reclaim 192 · signature headline · a dovish Warsh with the 10-year under 4.65% at Friday's close
Option 7 · The debasement complex · Win ~57% · Best performer of the week
Gold runner + long-gold/short-Nasdaq pair — the fiscal-dominance expression
Status
Gold single leg: ⅔ banked at 4,555 and 4,585 (+55, +85); ⅓ runner from ~4,500 (+117) plus a 0.5% add filled at ~4,565. The pair (long gold 4,542 / short Nasdaq 29,244) is +1.4% — the Nasdaq has underperformed gold by that much since entry
Action
Single leg: pyramid 0.5% only on a 30-min close above 4,635 (Friday's high) or a 4,570–4,580 pullback that holds. Pair: add half-size only if the Nasdaq bounces while gold sits still
Stop
Gold trail raised to 4,560 (the breakout shelf). Pair stop: Nasdaq outperforms gold by 2% from entry. Exit the gold legs alone if the dollar index reclaims 99.5
Targets
Gold 4,650 (half of runner) · 4,700 flat. Pair: Nasdaq underperforms by 2.5% (half) · 4% (flat)
Exit regardless
Dollar above 99.5 · a mediation/signature headline (exit all — peace de-escalates the debasement bid) · gold daily momentum above 80 (sell the euphoria) · 10-year below 4.55%
Option 8 · Unconventional event structure · NEW
The Nvidia/Warsh bracket: don't predict the direction — bracket the breakout
Thesis
The month's two biggest catalysts land 36 hours apart with the Nasdaq pinned between a magnet (29,109) and a chip gap (29,677), and VIX futures 15% above spot. Instead of a directional bet, place a one-cancels-the-other bracket: a buy-stop above the gap and a sell-stop below the floor cluster, each 1%. The asymmetry is the edge — the downside has two gap targets (28,935, 28,777); the upside has one (29,972)
Entry
Placed Wednesday 15:30 ET (pre-Nvidia): buy-stop 1% at 29,700 / sell-stop 1% at 29,090. First fill cancels the other. No discretionary entries inside the bracket
Stop
Bull leg 29,540 (back inside the cluster = failed breakout); bear leg 29,270 (back above the 30-min 20-average = failed breakdown). Both stops sit outside the magnets, per the gap doctrine (~0.4% book risk on whichever fills)
Targets
Bull: 29,857 (half) · 29,972 flat. Bear: 28,935 (half) · 28,777 flat
Exit regardless
Both legs flat by Friday 16:00 ET — the time box is the trade · cancel both on a signature headline before placement (the bracket assumes an earnings/Fed binary, not a peace binary) · VIX above 26 intraday: cancel the bull leg

The Honest Ledger

What we got wrong: Friday's base case was "an early tag of the magnets, then a bounce into the expiration pin." The magnets were never tagged — the Nasdaq stopped 33 points short, the S&P 31. Our own alternative ("strong business surveys lift the tape into the fade zones") is what printed. We also wrote that the breadth binary would likely break "on any down day"; it broke on an up day. Both are logged. What worked: the fade cluster was tagged and held — the Nasdaq short filled at 29,306–29,405 and closed 16 points under its 50-day; the rates-banks add filled on the failed bounce; gold hit two of three targets; the debasement pair is +1.4%. What was marginal: the S&P fade filled by 11 cents at 7,697 and made +23 — a fill by rule, not a trade to boast about. What cost: the volatility hedge never printed its 16.31 profit-take and gave back Thursday's gain — the price of a mechanical rule we keep. What broke again: the percent-above-50-day feed printed an identical value two days running and is excluded until it updates.

Bottom line: The economy is booming, prices bounced off the right lines, and the breadth count still fell through 60. Friday's session was a market respecting its edges — magnets below untouched, lids above refused — while the number that measures how many stocks are actually in uptrends kept falling. The framework's read: structural shorts are licensed for the first time in three weeks, the bounce is sold at the five-layer cluster, the magnet is bought half-size, and the week's two binaries are bracketed, not guessed. Judge this market by whether the breadth count re-closes above 60 — that single line now decides whether the boom or the break was the real story.
